Sympathy Terminology
Mache’ - A white biodegradable container (can
be foil covered) used as a base and water source for various sympathy designs.
The larger mache’ designs are generally positioned on stands surrounding the
casket by the funeral home staff.
Standing Spray - A three-sided oval elongated
design positioned on a wire easel. Finished design will generally stand from 5
to 6 feet in height and approximately 2 to 3 feet in width, depending on the
price and choice of flowers. The standing spray designs are generally placed in
the funeral home adjacent to the casket with family designs taking priority.
Other Standing Pieces - Also displayed on a
wire easel, the shapes can include open and closed hearts as well as solid
crosses, pillows and wreaths.
Casket Spray - A rounded spray of flowers
that is placed on the bottom half or closed portions of the casket for an “open
casket” viewing or service. The flowers can be viewed from all sides of the
casket but are generally more pronounced in the front or viewing side of the
spray. A casket spray for a “closed casket” viewing or service is generally
designed more elongated than one for an “open casket”.
Casket Lid Pieces – Small designs for display
in the lid of the casket. Popular shapes and forms include the heart, cross or
pillow and the form consists of a thin satin cushion with lace edge. These are
popular choices to come from grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Hinge Spray – A small L-shaped design made to
fit in the lower left corner of the casket lid.
Garland – Similar to a mantle garland in
appearance and generally designed with a mixture of greens and flowers. The
garland is generally made to place along the lower edge of the casket lid and is
approximately 36” in length.
